Nagercoil Palace - 1

Name : Nagercoil Palace, Kanyakumari District

Place : Nagercoil

Nagercoil Palace which now functions as the office of the
Revenue Divisional Officer is situated inside the Collectorate
campus of Kanyakumari District at Nagercoil.

Constructed around the 17 th century, this palace still
remains as the seat of power witnessing many historic events.

During the early 18th century a rebellion occurred in Travancore
after Maharajah Marthanda Varma succeeded to the throne from
his uncle, Rajah Rama Varma in 1729.

Rajah Rama Varma had left two sons, namely Sri Padmanabhan
Thampi and Sri Raman Thampi, known as the Kunju Thampis.

The Kunju Thampis wanted to succeed to the throne of their
father by putting an end to the matriarchal system in practice
known as Marumakkathayam.

It is widely believed that the Kunju Thampis were killed in this
Palace when they tried to kill Maharajah Marthanda Varma.
